This REU-EXTEND (EXTENded Data & Biological Collections) program at the Prairie Research Institute’s Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), located at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will provide 10-week summer research experience opportunities in 2027–2029. This program will provide undergraduate students with immersive, hands-on research experiences centered on the innovative use of biological collections and the “extended specimen” approach. Students will conduct projects using the world-class collections at INHS that include plants, insects, fishes, reptiles, mussels, and fossils to investigate questions in evolution, ecology, environmental change, and disease dynamics. The extended specimen lens enhances the impact of such collections by linking specimens with additional data such as genetic and environmental information, and species interactions. The ELEAN program aims to provide participants with essential and preferred job qualifications required for technician and engineering roles in areas such as mechatronics, maintenance, and chemical and material synthesis with a focus on emerging technologies such as advanced nanomufacturing, seminconductors, microelectronics, and related industries. The Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs (QA/RA) Certificate Program is an interdisciplinary, workforce-focused program designed to upskill or reskill professionals interested in careers that ensure medical products are safe, effective, and compliant with regulatory standards.
